Water nourishes all that coexist and co-prosper, forming an interdependent community of life. Miyun District is the most important drinking water source and ecological conservation area of Beijing. It is the primary task of the people of Miyun to safeguard the capital’s water for life. The district is committed to strengthening nature governance and water source governance in a collaborative, systematic and shared manner, and in accordance with science and law. Efforts have been taken to undertake afforestation and greening activities, enhance fisheries by releasing fish species, shut down enterprises and mines, return farmland for ecological restoration, close livestock and poultry farms, ban cage culture of fish, promote small watershed ecological management, strengthen rural domestic sewage treatment, and implement integrated management of mountains, water, forests, fields, lakes, grassland, and sand in the Miyun reservoir watershed. Miyun District has enhanced the coordinated working mechanism of “two cities and three districts” and established the reservoir volunteer service team, the Miyun Reservoir Protection Public Foundation and the Miyun Reservoir law enforcement brigade, mobilizing human, physical and technological resources to build a three-in-one safeguarding system. As a result, the district enjoys a 100% compliance rate of all surface-water cross-sections, and maintains a water storage of 3 billion m3 at Miyun Reservoir with reservoir water quality sustained at National Class II Standard for surface water. Miyun has been selected as a national case study of the“Beautiful Rivers and Lakes”campaign, and named a “Water governance by the people - A hundred years of merit” water project, becoming an exemplary work of ecological water preservation by humankind. We have developed eco-friendly industries to achieve green development and help people get rich by preserving water. “Miyun Reservoir Fish” and “Chinese Honey”are typical cases of national eco-products certification; while Gubei Water Town, Simatai Section of the Great Wall, Yunmeng Mountain, and Wuling Mountain are renowned resorts throughout the country and even in the world. At the same time, we have encountered new problems and challenges in water ecological protection that require us to jointly explore in practice in adherence to the principles of ecological priority, green development, water conservation and enrichment of the people while seeking solutions so as to build a community of shared future with harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
