2. 2. Promoting Water Efficiency, Productivity and ServicesSession descriptionShort description
This Special session is dedicated to sharing knowledge and experience from China's innovations towards smart water management. It brings together a group of scholars from different scientific and technical disciplines (engineering, hydrology, computer science, information technology, etc.) working on the development of smart technologies in urban and rural environments in China. The Special session will present and examine diverse case studies dealing with diverse topics, including leakage reduction, flood mitigation, sewage system management and sponge city construction. We expect to have 5 or 6 short presentations from the panel, followed by a Q&A session and discussion. The participants for the session have already collaborated together in the production of a special issue on Smart Water Management in China, published in Water International. Objective The objective for the session is to provide the audience with deeper understanding of the Chinese experience with Smart Water Management, and how smart water technologies can be used to address practical problems and improve the management of water resources both in China and beyond. We projected outcomes for the session are as follows: 1. Increased knowledge and understanding about Smart Water Management in China via the presentations and discussions. 2. Improved team work and collaboration between the participant presenters and organisations. 3. Networking. We hope the special session can provide opportunities for participants working in similar fields to meet and share common interests. 4. Feedback: We expect the special session to provide opportunities for presenters and the audience to give and receive feedback on the work presented, helping to improve research outputs. Justification In China, Smart Water Management has become a critical issue in the 21st century. China’s growing population and fast economic development has made increasing demands for water resources to support agriculture, industrial, and domestic needs. At the same time, industrial, agriculture and domestic water pollution is a persistent problem that needs addressing. The Chinese government has been at the forefront of activities on Smart Water Management, and this special session gives the opportunity to examine its multi-faceted nature.
