Abstract

Sub-theme

5. Establishing Sustainable Water Infrastructures

Topic

5-1. Exploitation and development of Nature-based Solutions in water engineering and technology

Body

The traditional function of river bank revetment is to resist flood disaster. In recent decades, with the process of urbanization and the concept of ecological civilization, the ecological function of the bank revetment is also need. So the stability, safety, durability, ecology and landscape should be both realized. After system researches, a typical guidance for ecological design and restoration of river bank revetment is formed and suggested. Firstly, all kinds of river bank forms are studied and summarized, including natural bank, engineering bank, and composite bank. Since different landforms and climates produce different river forms. Then, the designs of ecological bank revetment are learned and suggested for different rivers with various conditions. The advantages, disadvantages and adaptability of each ecological types are listed, including plant revetment, riprap revetment, rock revetment, stone gabion revetment, wood pile or imitation wooden pile revetment, ecological bag revetment, ecological concrete revetment, and so on. Furthermore, methods of ecological restoration and reconstruction of hard revetment are suggested, including overall upgrading and partial improving, based on the space size behind the bank. In conclusion, the bank revetment design shall be based on the principles of safety, natural ecology, functional diversity, and economic applicability. For the river channel with surplus land requisition conditions and wide estuary, natural bank should be preferred. The plant revetment, riprap revetment and ecological bag revetment are recommended. In the urban areas and historical areas, rivers always have small width sections, large flow discharge, little land requisition space etc. Engineering bank and composite bank can be applied. The rock revetment, stone gabion revetment, imitation wooden pile revetment, ecological concrete revetment are recommended. Furthermore, the integration of a variety of bank revetment forms can be designed, to improve the adaptability, stability and diversity. The river bank section can be divided into bottom protection area, heavy protection area and ecological area. In addition, ecological restoration and reconstruction of hard revetment should be carried out for some urban river banks if conditions permit.
