Abstract

Sub-theme

4. Supporting Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Functions

Topic

4-6. Aquatic biodiversity protection

Body

Nandu River is the largest river in Hainan Island, and also one of the rivers with the largest variety of aquatic biological resources in Hainan Island. However, there are few comprehensive evaluation of its aquatic organisms. In order to find out the situation of aquatic organisms in the Nandu River basin and the main problems of aquatic ecosystem, we constructed the comprehensive evaluation index system of aquatic organisms for rivers and reservoirs of the Nandu River basin respectively, put forward the expected value of the index, and carried out the assessment of aquatic organisms at the scale of river basin and county administrative region based on the aquatic organisms survey data in 2022. The results showed that, (1) The quality of the aquatic organisms in the Nandu River basin of Hainan Island was generally good. (2) There were spatial differences in the comprehensive evaluation index of aquatic organisms within the Nandu River basin, where the headwater area had the low comprehensive evaluation index of aquatic organisms, and the the middle and lower reaches had the relatively higher comprehensive evaluation index of aquatic organisms. (3) In the administrative region within the Nandu River basin of Hainan Island, Danzhou had the highest comprehensive evaluation score of aquatic organisms within Nandu River basin; while Chengmai County had the lowest comprehensive evaluation score of aquatic organisms within Nandu River basin. The relative abundance of small cladocera, macrobenthic invertebrate biological integrity index (B-IBI) were the shortboard indexes of Chengmai County. (4) Reservoirs within Nandu River basin had the highest comprehensive evaluation score of aquatic organisms, tributaries and main stream of the Nandu River had the relatively lower comprehensive evaluation index of aquatic organisms. Our results could provide scientific and reliable basis for ecological protection and restoration of Nandu River basin of Hainan Island in future.
