The Rio Verde Grande is an important basin in the northern part of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. With the extensive regional development, mainly expansion of irrigated areas and urban population have resulted in low water availability in regional rivers and have been causing use of water conflicts since the 1980's. In 2003, to meet the challenges of water resource management, the creation of the Rio Verde Grande basin Committee was approved by the National Water Resources Council. After some years, the preparation of " Water Resources Plan of the Rio Verde Grande was initiated. Some actions aimed to articulate the instruments of the National Water Resources Policy for the management and multiple use, and integrated surface and groundwater resources. This is directly reflected in the confrontation of the two main problems encountered in basin: water scarcity with its impact on the quality and quantity of water and poor management of water resources in the region. The objective of this work is to evaluate the water management for the next years and to calculate the sustainability index of water resources in the Rio Verde Grande basin, in the state of Minas Gerais , Brazil, evaluating and comparing water demand and water supply for activities of the Water Resources Plan of Verde Grande basin in three different scenarios of water supply. These scenarios include water imports and the construction of channels and reservoirs. The sustainability index is used to evaluate and to compare alternative plans of current and future water availability and water supply. This case study explains the implications of these scenarios by sustainability index, which takes into account measures of reliability, resilience and vulnerability. The sustainability index identified policies that improved the water availability of the Verde Grande Basin (VGB) for the future and considering the whole basin, there are no significant improvements in water supply with the implementation of these policies proposed by the Water Resources Plan for the VGB.
