Abstract

ABSTRACT

The catchment area of the Capibaribe river presents serious water quality problems. This is due the lack of sanitation infrastructure in the municipalities bordering the Capibaribe River coupled up to low flows rate. Modeling studies of the nutrients in the water issue have an important role to define strategic actions for the management of the river basins. This study presents water quality modeling results at the Capibaribe river, located between CB-60 and CB-80 monitoring stations. The QUAL-UFMG model was used to simulate the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). It used the automatic calibration using Solver algorithm and manual calibration. To apply the model, the organic load from the domestic sewage of São Lourenço da Mata and Camaragibe was taken in consideration as well the slaughterer located in this area. Based on the observed data, the model showed efficient to simulate the parameters of the river in this stretch.
