Abstract

ABSTRACT

The water bodies are capable of self-purification, which allows them to receive a certain amount of pollution load and still maintain the minimum quality of water, the basis for setting instream flow. This paper analyzes the compatibility of pollutant loads with a minimum capacity of self-purification of the Mussuré river inserted in Gramame River basin, of Paraíba/ Brazil, by simulating scenarios of industrial wastewater treatment, according to the mathematical model QUAL 2E. Such analysis is justified by the fact that the stream received various pollutant loads, affecting aquatic life and local coastal communities. For the treatment efficiency, were simulated scenarios considering the parameters of water quality, obtained from SUDEMA. The simulation showed that the stream no longer has power to purify, and the water quality standards are incompatible with the framework of its class, according to CONAMA, even if an efficient treatment of effluent received.

Keywords: water bodies; self-purification; QUAL 2E.
