ABSTRACT
Quantitative analysis of levels of organic parameters (BTEX) in the lakes Bolonha and Água Preta (surface water sources for water catchment to supply the population of Belém - capital of the State of Para - and part of its metropolitan area), located in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of the Utinga Park, may indicate the extent of the pollution problem caused by unorganized demographic expansion of Souza neighborhood - where the APA is located. Furthermore, by capturing water directly from the river Guama (important route of fluvial transportation , through which vessels of all sizes, national and international, towards industrial districts, as Barcarena and Manaus, and big cities, like Santarém), the Lakes are susceptible to contamination by petroleum and its derivatives, which can pose a serious public health problem for approximately 1.7 million people.
