ABSTRACT
The perspective of an increased degradation of the Camboriú River watershed in the coming years and its consequences on the basin water balance and on the water treatment costs motivated the Balneário Camboriú municipality to adopt the payment for environmental services concept. Through the implementation of the Water Producer Project, landowners who conserve and restore riparian areas and other sensitive areas will be financially compensated proportionally to the areas they conserve. Additionally, the need to conserve and adequately maintain dirt roads around the watershed has also been identified as key components to reduce sedimentation and loss of water quality.
