Abstract

Abstract

The occurrence of major floods in cities in Brazil has generated serious problems for the population, both in metropolitan regions and in smaller towns drained by rivers flowing through wide areas. The floods in the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas, northeastern Brazil, are included in this second case, especially those occurred in the rivers Una, Mundaú and its tributaries, which have their headwaters in the central region of Pernambuco state, resulting in catastrophic inundation in dozens of cities in both states. This paper deals with aspects of flood hydrology, causes and effects of inundation occured and the actions of reconstruction in progress.
