AbstractThe paper studies on the method about estimate the longitudinal dispersion coefficient of the pollutant in the main stream of the lower Yellow River, PRC, from Xiaolangdi Reservoir in Henan Province to Lijin County in Shandong Province with about a total length of 750km which has the complicated riverway characteristics and hydrology condition. Making use of the river cross section velocity distribution measured data and adopting the theories calculation method, the empirical formulas for estimate the longitudinal dispersion coefficient in the Yellow River are proposed by dimensional analysis and multivariate regression analysis. The result is able to be applied to establish and use the one-dimension water quality model in the water quality pre-warning and prediction system in the main stream of the lower Yellow River. Phenomenon is discovered from the study that the Yellow River longitudinal dispersion coefficient value changed violently and frequently. Thus, the further studies are necessary.
