Abstract

The water treatment plant of Guandu has vital importance to the state of Rio de Janeiro since it is responsible for supplying 8.5 million people in Greater Rio. This paper proposes a methodology for qualitative analysis of vulnerability of the Guandu WTP to climate variability and others threats, in terms of quality and quantity of water resources. We adopted the concept of vulnerability as a function of exposure (the degree to which a system experiences stress), sensitivity (the degree to which a system is affected by stress) and adaptive capacity (the ability of a system to adjust, moderate, or deal the consequences of a stress). Four threats considered the most crucial for the current vulnerability of the WTP Guandu were proposed in the methodology: i) climate variability, ii) interbasin water transfer, iii) environmental conditions and water quality, and iv) environmental accidents.

Keywords: Vulnerability, Climate variability, Guandu Water Treatment Plant.
