Abstract

ABSTRACT The lack of city planning on the banks of waterways, causes damage to the population, arising from possible flooding. To minimize potential impacts, one must make a management and mapping of areas at risk for flooding. To identify these areas, we used the Geographic Information Systems (GIS), through the ArcGIS 9.3 software, using statistical models and the reclassification of environmental variables that make up the model for flood Basin Piraquê-caiman, which includes the cities of Aracruz, Ibiraçu, Neiva and Santa Teresa, in Espirito Santo state, resulting in a flood risk map of the basin. Assigning a high value in the study related to the proper planning of cities, whether urban or rural, adopting preventive and mitigating the social good.
