Abstract
Acaú community, in the town of Pitimbu, south coast of Paraíba, deals with fishing, and shellfish and crab gathering as the main local income source. Some elements of its fauna, especially the ones from mangrove swamp and that are related to productive activities of handcraft fishing, shellfish and crab gathering have been undergoing sharp reduction. This research aims to evaluate the water quality for human consumption and the superficial waters referring to these productive activities. It analyzed the microbiological attributes and has been correlating its results with the quality of life of this community. It is a case study which used techniques such as Focus Group and laboratory analyses. It intends to contribute to the local managing process under the perspective to improve the environmental management with focus on hydric resources – water quality, quality of life of the community and its families as well as preservation of the mangrove swamp.
