Abstract

Abstract:

Brazil currently has an area of Atlantic highly reduced and fragmented, with only 7% of the original, incorporating a current of 34 "hotspots"of the planet. The preservation of these remains has been ensuring the protection of rich aquatic ecosystems, slope stabilization and maintenance of essential water sources to supply about 70% of the population. Water is essential to give life to Atlantic, where its forests have a vital role in the maintenance of hydrological processes that ensure the quality and volume of water courses. The Big Island is located in the municipality of Angra dos Reis, and one of the largest remnants of Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro. The island suffers from the high demand of tourists, mainly during summer. This heavy tourist inflow in the island undertakes water resources (FRANCISCO et al., 2009), causing drainage problems exacerbated by increased and inappropriate waste disposal, siltation of water bodies and decrease their flow velocities, that may generate problems associated with water shortage crisis. The challenge of this project is to contribute to the conservation, preservation of biodiversity and water resources and maintenance of public supply, by assessing the quality of its waters, developing its economic potential and its sustainable use harmonizing human activities, and its capacity waters support them.
