Abstract
This study investigated the level of pollution of the river Mandacaru in the city of João Pessoa, PB. Proposed to evaluate the water quality of river to use the results obtained in the implementation of public policies to Water Management in urban areas and in protected areas. The research was born of a partnership between the Federal Office for Education Science and Technology of Paraíba (IFPB) –João Pessoa and Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). The results revealed a level of pollution exceeded, especially when it comes to parameters dissolved oxygen, nitrate total and fecal coliforms. Under these conditions the river under study is presented in a state of environmental alert indicating the need for a better assessment as to its classification and availability of use of its waters. We have created a database to support future research and implement water management in local contexts.
