Abstract
High impact floods have occurred in Brazil in the last years due to high intensity storms. This kind of event is characterized by the large volume of precipitation falling in a short period of time. In addition, the topography of these areas contributes for the high speed of the water in the river channel, resulting in a flash flood event. The objective of this study is to evaluate the integration of the rainfall-runoff model HEC-HMS with the hydrodynamic model HEC-RAS. The integration permits a better understanding of the processes involved: runoff generation and flow routing. The study area is Una River basin (6,740.0 km2) located in Pernambuco State-Brazil. Several cities located on the banks of Una River were affected after strong storms on June 2010. The results showed that the integration of models can be useful for flood modeling and flood management in the cities threatened by these natural disasters.
