Abstract

ABSTRACT

In 2007 the method of environmental indicators for assessment of the waters of the State of São Paulo was adopted. This method is based on DPSIR system, where human activities represent the Driving Forces, whose Pressure affects the State of the environment, causing Impacts on human health and ecosystems, which should be minimized through Responses. Currently 65 indicators are in use, defined in a process based on conceptual and methodological understanding of each indicator and its representativeness for management. Participated in this process the Department of Water Resources Management (Coordenation of Water Resources), river basin Committees, research institutions and several public agencies. These indicators form the basis for monitoring the state and water management in the State of São Paulo and are also used in the “River Basin Report”, “The Sao Paulo State Water Resources Situation Report” and in the “River Basin Management Plans”, evaluating the decision-making by municipal, state and national managers.
