ABSTRACT
Every year, thousands of people die or have material damages as a consequence of natural disasters. In Brazil, although there are no high-magnitude earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the records of events related mostly to overflows are expressive. This scenario of vulnerability demands an urgent search for solutions that include the adoption of measures that facilitate and promote the adaptation of communities that live in situation of risk. The first step to create an action plan to mitigate the impact of critical events is the identification of the areas with higher frequency of disaster records in the country. This essay aims to analyze the records of emergency situation and public calamity state done by the National Civil Defense from 2003 to 2010, as well as to identify the frequency, geographical distribution, importance and overall impacts of hydrometeorological disasters in the country’s hydrograph regions.
Keywords: Overflows, emergency situation, public calamity state.
