Abstract

ABSTRACT

STUDY OF THEORETICAL SPEED PROFILES FOR THE ESTIMATION OF SPECIFIC SPEEDS OF CROSS SECTION OF A RIVER

Among the various methods of monitoring the discharge flow of a river, there is a speed measurement with current meter, in which the propeller spins due to the flow are recorded in a given time interval. Current meters used for streamflow measurements are rated individually by towing the meters at known velocities in a tank of still water and recording the rates of revolution of the rotors. The current meter calibrations are normally expressed as a linear equation from which calibration certificates are prepared. Through its specific calibration equation, these data are converted to specific speeds and this process repeats for each of several set points in cross section, which makes the time-consuming and tiring. From these data collected it is possible to construct the velocity profile of the cross-section. Due to the difficulty in measuring a large number of specific speeds the reverse process is proposed, that is, from a characteristic velocity profile section under study, estimating the specific speeds. For this, velocities distribution models from the literature were studied and comparisons between experimental and theoretical profiles for multiple profiles were done.
