Abstract

ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the heavy rainfall variability in São Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR) and its relationship with 2009/2010 rainy season. In this way the rainfall series are analyzed to verify the existence of trends. Particularly two variables are considered: volume and duration. One important variable related to the floods was the number of consecutive rainy days. This variable is very important due to the fact that the floods were caused mainly to this characteristic. Considering daily statistics 2009/2010 events were not so intense with low recurrences. By other side the volume of many consecutive rainy days was very high. The 2009/2010 season was paradigmatic. Due to it the urban drainage design criteria has to be review mainly for complex systems like SPMR one. This paper aims to contribute to this discussion.
