ABSTRACT
In 2010, a reaserch was conducted to evaluate the awareness of the Alto Tietê Cabeceiras basin population about the management and decision making of the water resources. For this purpose, a quantitative methodology was used, with qualitative bias, involving a representative sample of the basin. 829 people were interviewed, divided proportionally to the population of nine districts. The research supported the Cabeceiras Subcommittee, responsible for the collegiate water management, recovering and identifying knowledge and popular perception of Basin Committees and the theme of water. The results orientated proposals to solve problems in the region. The investigation of popular knowledge on water management was essential to evaluate the performance, efficiency and reach of existing public policies, enabling the inclusion processes of a population in the discredited government and its own processing capacity.
