Abstract

Abstract

In the last years it has been observed, in several places, an accelerated population growth. This increasing of population generates several impacts like the increase in the demand for natural resources, mainly water. According to data of ANA, Pernambuco is the Brazilian state that presents to smallest water availability, almost 1270 m³/inhabitant/year. Besides, one part of this area is over a crystalline rock, which limits the possibilities of groundwater extraction. This paper analyses the potential of economy of water from public system when it is used rainwater in the 71 located municipal districts in the Rural Area of Pernambuco. The methodology includes the catching of the following data: precipitation, consumption of water from public system, population and amount of houses in each municipality. The studies that were carried out on each of 71 municipal districts of the Pernambuco indicated that the percentage of economy of the water from public system can be reduced between 25% and more. These values indicates it is possible to reduce the needs of water from public system. The municipal district of Iati presented the smallest potential of economy of water, approximately 25%.

Keywords: Potable water saving, rainwater usage.
