The use and land occupation can cause floods. The stormwater detention appears as an alternative to solve the problem. The design of these structures requires specific knowledge, and many designers have problems to evaluate such projects, there came the need for proposing methods of calculation simple, practical and safe to generated values that assist in the pre-sizing of reservoirs. The proposed technique is based on the rational method to estimates the design flow. For evaluation of the proposed calculation was conducted a case study in a urban watershed located in the city of Pirassununga, São Paulo, Brazil, where the proposed method was compared with the SCS (1986) and the FAA method, and the Porto (2002) dimensionless method. The results showed that the method can be used satisfactorily for pre-sizing of detention basins.
