Abstract

Abstract

Disordered occupations by the population, caused by the high population growth, have caused changes in the characteristics of aquatic environments, due to the incorporation of different substances from irregular domestic effluents discharges. Therefore, this article consists in the characterization, through female sex hormones, of the anthropogenic contamination by domestic effluents, since that group of substances can be detected and indicate the level of contamination in aquatic ecosystems. These compounds can be produced naturally by female organisms or produced synthetically, as they are components of female contraceptives. Thus, we analyzed the α-ethinylestradiol (synthetically produced), β- estradiol and estrone (both produced naturally by female organisms) on the coast of Parana State, in Brazil. Samples were collected in July 2010 (low season and low demand of tourists), in December 2010 (early season) and in March 2011 (high season). These samples were taken in 6 different places, all situated in rivers in the region and in the ocean. The female sex hormones concentration were found in high season, the maximum concentration found was in Port of Paranaguá, 5,546 µg/L.

Keyworlds: Coast of Paraná, female sex hormones, anthropogenic pollution.
