ABSTRACT --- Information about the return period of a hazardous hydrological event recently happened is a concern of the authorities and of the media. The just in time answer to authorities is possible if there is an updated study of intense rainfall for the region, dependent on historical data from a representative monitoring network in space and time, with enough automatic recording gages to sample the spatial variability of regional rainfall. This work evaluates the events of April 2010 and January 2011, both of which generated the more severe damages in non-monitored sites. A comparison was then established with other hazardous events scarcely registered in Rio de Janeiro State. The analysis considered surface and satellite precipitation data, associated damages, land use and vegetation cover, and social environmental indicators, basic information for land use planning and management and for implementing disaster prevention policies.
