You don't need a Microsoft account to set up a Hotmail account. It is free to create and use anywhere, anytime. To set up a Hotmail account, follow the following steps:

• 1. In a web browser, navigate to the Outlook homepage, and click on the sign-in page.
• 2. Click on “Create free account”.
• 3. Put in a username that would become part of your email address.
• 4. Click on the dropdown arrow on the far right of the username field to select the domain. You can create an account in either of the domain, Outlook.com or Hotmail.com. Click on Next.
• 5. Create a strong password. Ensure that the password must be an 8-character one, combining letters, symbols, and numbers. The stronger password, the securer it is.
• 6. On the next page, enter your first and last names in the given fields.
• 7. Choose your country and enter your date of birth. (These details help in recovering the forgotten password, hence make sure to enter them correctly.)
• 8. Enter correct characters from CAPTCHA to proceed.
• 9. On the next screen, put in your phone number and tap on “Send Code”. Hotmail will send you an OTP (One Time Password) via text message. Enter it and click on Next.

Hotmail.com will then set up your account and direct you to the main page.
