The International Water Resources Association (IWRA) and the Faroese Geological Survey (Jar\u00f0feingi) recently concluded the 1st Islands Water Congress, held from 4-6 September at the Nordic House in T\u00f3rshavn, Faroe Islands. Hosted by Jar\u00f0feingi<\/a> (the Faroese Geological Survey), this flagship event provided a platform for critical insights into the distinct challenges and opportunities surrounding freshwater water management on islands. Bringing together global experts, decision-makers, and island communities from 40 countries, the Congress offered a comprehensive look into how islands can take the lead in addressing some of the world\u2019s most pressing water issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Theme: Freshwater and Islands: Administration, Collaboration and Innovation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Islands Water Congress marked a significant milestone in addressing pressing water challenges faced by island communities globally. The Congress fostered discussions and collaborations on administration, collaboration, and innovation in freshwater management on islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This biennial Islands Water Congress promises to be a cornerstone event in advancing sustainable water use and management, with far-reaching implications for island communities and beyond. Attendees will find ample opportunities to connect, share knowledge, and catalyse action toward water resilience in island contexts. The three-day programme will consist of diverse array of paper presentations from experts, special sessions from renowned institutions, creative cultural presentations, and esteemed keynote speakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ISLANDS WATER CONGRESS<\/h3>

Administration, Collaboration and Innovation<\/p><\/div>

The Conference will take place on the 4th<\/sup><\/sub> to 6th<\/sup> of September 2024 in T\u00f3rshavn, in the Faroe Islands<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The international community is paying attention to global water challenges through the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other international avenues. However, islands face increasing freshwater challenges, due, amongst other factors, to climate change, which need to be addressed urgently and often require bespoken island responses. In fact, island policy and investment focus often remain on surface water or even on desalinization without the needed attention to groundwater and water demand management with specific consideration to alternative water resources, such as water reuse and water conservation campaigns. Furthermore, distribution network management \u2013 for instance, addressing real (leakages) and apparent (water which is consumed but not billed) losses in the system \u2013 also needs to be considered carefully. At the same time, international water conferences tend to take a global approach following traditional semi-academic routes, focusing on paper\/poster delivery presentations on global water-related matters, which do not always cater to specific policy water challenges. 

The biannual International Water Resources Association (IWRA) Congress on Freshwater and Islands aims to plug this twofold gap firstly by creating a forum for island-specific responses to water opportunities and challenges including focusing on a specific topic. The Islands Water Congress will be used to provide tools for the island partner to progress on specific water-related issues that it has identified in advance as of special interest. The tools will, however, also be relevant for a global island audience. Overall, the event aspires to go beyond a traditional academic conference and include also a more policy-relevant focus, which will be of interest to and useful for water professionals working on islands, and in SIDS in particular. It also wants to be a celebration of freshwater within an island context, including arts, culture, and the younger island generations.

In the first edition of the Islands Water Congress, the theme will be \u201cAdministration, Collaboration and Innovation\u201d. 
<\/strong>The Faroe Islands is an archipelago of 18 islands inhabited by 54,000 people. Even in an island country like the Faroe Islands, each of the 18 islands is unique for geographical, hydrogeological, and socio-economic reasons. Freshwater is crucial in the Faroe Islands for human consumption and socio-economic activities, with particular importance for its electricity production and the operation of its aquaculture industry. Against this background, the Faroe Islands are interested in developing a tool useful to enhance and take forward the administration of freshwater resources in the Faroe Islands. 

The conference will take place over two and a half days as an in-person event with an approximate attendance of 250-400 people. Further details on plenary and special sessions will be discussed once the themes and sub-themes have been fully agreed upon.
