SOCIETY, WATER AND HEALTH IN THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION

Organised by: Mediterranean Agronomic Institute, Montpellier (IAM.M) and University Montpellier 1
Date: 5 September 2008

Population increase and pressure on natural resources has been rising rapidly in the Mediterranean region. Water as a rare resource, is used for agriculture (80% in Mediterranean regions), but also for domestic, tourist and industrial purposes. Current and potential conflicts show the importance of multi-thematic and interinstitutional approaches for:

  • Identification of zones and where shortages are critical, and how management policies can solve these problems; and
  • Water access rights and how global health policy can regulate diseases linked to water quality
