What South Korea Can Offer the World of Smart Water Management, 18 July 2019.
This webinar was co-hosted with the Korea Water Forum (KWF) and focused on “What South Korea can offer the world of smart water management”. This 90-minute online event was based on themes from the upcoming Korea International Water Week and highlighted the work being done by members of the KWF.
Panellists discussed on the advances made in smart water management particularly from Korea and explored ways that this could be applied in other contexts. They highlighted the use of sensors and information technology to track and understand the impacts of water management. They also brought into attention the many elements of water management, looking at the use of big data in the context of homes, agriculture or industry and the many different types of water that can be tracked – looking at groundwater, rainwater, or wastewater reuse. It was stated that this type of water management can be applied in different contexts to address the impacts from climate change and to improve resilience. A final remark made by the panelists were the different scales and contexts that smart water management can be used in. For example, at the urban and city scale, smart water management can be used to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
During the webinar our poll asked what would be the best way to communicate the lessons from Korea. Our result was a near tie between more social media and informal communication as well as increased research opportunities.
With over 110 attendees registered, this webinar was an great collaboration between the Korea Water Forum and IWRA and featured Prof. Joo Heon Lee, Professor at Jung-bu University; Prof. Seungho Lee, Vice-President at Graduate School of International Studies, Korea University; Dr. Jinsuk Suh, Researcher at Korea Water Resources Corporation; and, Prof. Kyungtaek Yum, Professor at Sungkyunkwan University. This event was moderated by Scott McKenzie, PhD Candidate, University of British Columbia.
