ASSESSMENT OF WATER QUALITY IN COASTAL LAGOONS SYSTEMS:AN INNOVATIVE INDEX FOR KÜÇÜKÇEKMECE LAGOON, ISTANBUL

AbstractAmong water resources, coastal lagoon systems have particular ecological, morphological and hydrodynamic characteristics and act like a transitional zone in between freshwaters and open waters. This study aims to develop a water quality index specially for sustainable management of coastal Lagoons by focusing on case study area Küçükçekmece, located in the western side of İstanbul and adjacent to Marmara Sea. The index reveals following vital problems of the Lagoon: (a) aquatic biodiversity with dissolved oxygen saturation ratio, (b) trophic status by assessment of TN/TP ratio and subsequently selection of nutrient species -either nitrate or orthophospahte-, and chlorophyll-a (c) organic and inorganic contamination by COD, pH, turbidity and electrical conductivity. The normalization curves used in previous indices have been analyzed and reconstructed according to national and international criterias. Subsequently, the parameters have been aggregated by weighted sum method and representented on a scale of 100. The results of the study have verified water quality decline trends for the Lagoon and two of its tributary creeks Eskinoz and Sazlidere. Additionally, seasonal events such as algal blooms and impact of fertilizers were being traced with index scores.
