AbstractThis research focused on a geomorphologic study developed in the lower portion of the Santa Rosa river basin, Calamuchita department, Córdoba Province. This is one of the most important basins for the tourist activity in the Córdoba hill area. Nevertheless, during summer seasons, overflows of high magnitude have been recorded. In the past, these natural floods caused fatalities and important material damages. The relevance of this paper is based on the fact that there are no previous detailed studies in the area and that in the last years these areas have experienced a fast growth. Considering this problem, the purpose of this case study is to give basic elements from a geologic-geomorphological perspective to the hydric risk to which the closest areas to the river are exposed to. Thus, a hydric risk map in the lower part of the Santa Rosa river was created. To reach the objectives of this research, aerial photographs taken in different years, and recent satellite images were examined. Their comparison showed how the stream evolved over 43 years. All this information was corroborated and complemented by field work, in which the main stream course and the lateral drainage were followed. The elaboration of the hydric risk map included, among other tasks, a detailed analysis of regional characteristics and the drainage net, determination of the different physiographic parameters, natural threats and population vulnerability. In relation to this last aspect, interviews made with the community of the region were of great use, since early inhabitants gave important data for the adjustment and for the confirmation of the information gathered through the photo analysis. Taking this context into account, this research proposes mitigation strategies to minimize the uncertainty level of the lower Santa Rosa river basin, giving the population information about the expected fluvial behavior. It also provides authorities an insight to the vulnerability existing in the segment. As a result, this research gives the necessary basis for the ordered planning of the area, aiming at the prevention and minimization of losses – both material and human.
