Abstract

In our country, arid and semi-arid regions, without being subjected to any processing of domestic and industrial wastes, is widely used for irrigation. World and in our studies, use of urban waste water for irrigation have shown that the most important infectious threat. Household waste or sewage discharge is a major problem in the whole world. Of sewage, industrial wastes, heavy metals pollution of these waters is caused by interference If this character is used in the irrigation water, leads to the accumulation of heavy metals in the soil and constitute a danger to human health through the food chain. For this purpose, research, connected to the center of Sanliurfa Province Pasabagi Karakoyun rivulet of sewage and waste waters of the land location of watering, public health, soil and plant deals with problems created by, The crops grown here are usually consumed raw significantly threaten human health. Flowing waste water and raw vegetables are eaten in the open typhoid, paratyphoid, dysentery, etc. of parasites carries the risk of diseases. In this study conducted in Harran Plain, it was aimed to evaluate effects of irrigation of vegetable crops in Pasabagı Region by Karakoyun river wastewaters in human health, soil and plants. Based on the results from the study, it was proposed to determine the effects of irrigation of the lands by normal irrigation water to environment. In this regard, five different water samples were collected twice during irrigation periods (May 31, 2001-June 27, 2001) from waste waters used to irrigate Pasabagı agricultural lands to analize Pb, Zn, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Cd, Hg, Ar, K, Na, Ca, Mg, pH, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC) and bacteria levels. In the research, plant samples were collected twice with three replications from crops; fresh onion, parsley and mentha spicata grown in this region to analize Ca, Na, Mg, K, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn. Soil samples were colleceted twice with three replications from the effective soil depth in each crop to analize pH, EC, K, Na, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu and total salt levels. Research results revealed that high concentrations of pathological microorganizms in wastewater were serious thtreath to human health and environment. Thus, the results suggested that wastewater shold not be used for irrigation purposes. Because Sanlıurfa wastewater treatment facility was out of the research region, it was found that reuse of treated wastewater for irrigatin was not a feasible task. It was concluded that pumping the treated waste-water back to the agricultural fields in the research region for irrigation was not an appropriate alternative due to investment and operation costs. However, it might be possible to carry water by gravitational means for irrigation which could be provided by Sanlıurfa water tunnels flown to Harran Plain in GAP Project. In conclusion, it was suggested that providing water from Tigris River with Şanlıurfa Tunnels to irrigate agricultural lands studied in this research was a better alternative.
