Protecting Water of Outstanding Universal Significance:

Congress: 2008
Author(s):
Professor of Law, former Rapporteur of the World Heritage Convention, and leader of the New Zealand delegation to the World Heritage Convention.
AbstractProtected areas of international significance, increasingly encompass fresh water systems. The international management of such systems ranges from them being listed as world heritage due to their outstanding universal value, through to their being seriously threatened (in terms of pollution, scarcity or equity concerns). This paper will examine how the international law and policy manages the most stunning fresh water areas on the planet.
