Determination of the quality of drinking water in the wilaya of Batna (Algeria): bacteriological and physico-chimical study

AbstractIn the wilaya of Batna, one records a quantitative lack in drinking water because of low rainfall due to the overall climatic changes and the exclusive dependence on the phreatic layer to supply a population in a perpetual increase. The method of study of the quality of drinking waters consisted in the taking of about thirty samples on various Batna localities. One took into consideration the origin of water for each taking sample it means. (well water, tarpaulin water, tank water, tap water and fodder water). Bacteriological results of analyses carried out on all samples for the seeking of: Coliforms, fecal streptococci , Pseudomonads, fecal Coliforms and Clostridium ulfuto showed that the enteric bacteria looked for are weakly to negligibly present. Besides this, several physico- chemical parameters were tested, of which some are measured directly on ground and other at the laboratory level counting: Conductivity, pH, MT, Turbidity, Hardness, NaCl rate, Nitrates/Nitrites, Phosphorus, sulfate and the chloride using the following methods: Measure by electrochemical portable probe, Photometry (spectrometry) and Titration or colorimetry. The concentration of nitrates fluctuates according to the locality, it varies between 0,93 mg/l and 24,32 mg/l, notwithstanding these concentrations do not exceed the “WHO” standards of (50 mg/l), these values obtained in particular in certain areas lead to a qualitative worry.
