China’s Water Resources Management in the New Age
11 December 2018
IWRA was proud to host a webinar for its China Chapter on “China’s Water Resources Management in the New Age” on December 11th, 2018.
This 90-minute webinar was based on themes being discussed by IWRA’s China Chapter. IWRA currently has regional and national chapters in China, India, Japan and Oceania. These chapters provide an opportunity for extensive regional and local networking among IWRA members and a platform for them to exchange knowledge and experiences as well as discussing specific regional and local issues.
The panellists covered a range of issues including the relationship between China’s on-going economic development and rapidly increasing freshwater consumption. This also relates to the increased trade-offs in sectors like electricity, particularly hydropower, and the ecosystem needs including the often overlooked area of groundwater. Our panellists agreed on the need to create durable and sustainable systems for water management on the basin and ecosystem scale rather than a narrow focus on one or two users, such as in cities, or a sector, for instance human consumption.
More than 105 registrants participated in this webinar, while distinguished panellists included Li Yuanyuan, Vice-President of the General Institute of Hydropower and Water Resources Planning and Design, MWR, and Vice-President of IWRA; Rabindra Osti, Senior Water Resources Specialist at ADB’s Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture Division; Jia Shaofeng, Professor, Institute of Geographic Science and Natural Resources Research, CAS; David Tickner, Chief Freshwater Adviser, WWF; Zhao Zhongnan, Deputy Division Chief, General Institute of Hydropower and Water Resources Planning and Design, MWR; and, Yu Lili, Senior Engineer, General Institute of Hydropower and Water Resources Planning and Design, MWR. This webinar was moderated by Scott McKenzie, IWRA Webinars Officer.
